Climate

 

Stevia is a semi-humid, subtropical plant and can grow in the temperature ranges between 04 - 48 C. An annual average temperature of 31o C with a rainfall of 140 cm per year has been found optimum for its good growth. It shows good seed germination when subjected to light and warm conditions. Hence, a long growing season, minimal frost, high light intensities and warm temperature favors higher leaf production. Stevia is a short day plant, but the concentration of stevioside in the leaves increases when the plants are grown under long day conditions. The day temperatures should not exceed 48 oC and the night temperatures should not fall below 04 o C.

Soil & Propagation

Stevia grows well in sandy loam soils with an ample supply of water. stevia prefers acidic to neutral soil with a PH range of 6.5-7.5 for its best growth. Saline soils should be avoided as stevia plant is susceptible to water logged conditions.

Propagation

Stevia plants can be propagated from cuttings or seeds or by tissue culture. As the seed germination is very poor and seedlings are very slow to establish, it is generally propagated clonally through cuttings. For vegetative propagation, stem cuttings of 15 cm length taken from leaf axils of the current year’s growth have been given better results. Treatment with Paclobutrazol @ 100ppm has been found to induce the root initiation in short time and IBA@500 ppm is also found to be effective. The best months for propagation are February-March. The cuttings will be ready for transplanting after 25-30 days of rooting.

STEVIA NURSERY CULTIVATION

During May or June month land should be deep ploughed  and get freely open so that  harmful soil born insects and other  undesired  substances will be destroyed.

As per requirement 10* 3*1 ½  ft  bed should be prepared.  Properly mix  50 Kg/bed organic compost .
In the mean time waste things should be cleaned from bed. After that according to rows seeds are put on the beds . After that seeds are covered  by  ½ cm thick layer of brawn  of rice and wheat. now prepared beds are ready to produce stevia plant.

Precautions :

Bed should be prepared under shadow area.
The  bed preparation area should be well drained .
Bed soil should be insect free.
Use appropriate insecticide , bactericide, fungicide  to protect stevia from insect or dieses.
Bird net should be used to protect bed from the birds.

IRRIGATION :

Maintain moisture according to weather  on the stevia bed .
Be careful  ample supply of water invite insect dieses. So irrigate once in a day in winter and 3 or 4 times in a day in summer.
Bed height  should be 1 to 1 ½  feet above  from  surrounding land.
Keep 2 to 3 feet distance between 2 beds so that intercultural practices should be one properly.

After  5-6 days stevia plants get started grow.
Conteneous irrigation should be done as per requirement.
After 5 to 6 week stevia plants are ready for transplantation. Carefully take out plants and put them on  cold and well moisture place.
As much as possible transplant the plants on main land.

Fertilizers

The stevia plant appears to have low nutrient requirements; however a soil test should be conducted. Good organic manure must be applied time to time. Stevia plants respond well to fertilizers with lower nitrogen content than the fertilizer's phosphoric acid or potash content. Most organic fertilizers would work well, since they release nitrogen slowly. Success of Stevia plantation is the appropriate Fertigation schedule that would ensure optimum yields with highest Steviocide content.

Inter cultural practices

Stevia crop also requires hand hoeing and weeding. After every 2 months there must be weeding. Regular weeding must be done in stevia cultivation. Un-notified weeds are sucking 20% of nitrogen from main crop per hectare which leads to unnecessary loss of yield & profit.

PESTS

Insect pest pressures other than cutworm are minimal. Septoria disease can cause considerable damage to the Stevia crop. Animals seem to like the sweet taste of Stevia, too. Application on neem based product will manage the disease and pests.

Correction of nutrient deficiencies

Nutrient deficiencies are to be corrected by a combination of organic manuring and fertilizer application. Green manuring, green leaf manuring and cover cropping are also practices that will add nutrients. The commonly used organic manures are farmyard manure, compost, sheep manure, poultry manure, fish meal, bone meal, green manures and green leaf manures. These organic manures contain all the essential nutrients required for the growth of plants but at lower concentrations. These nutrients also occur as part of the organic matter which are to undergo decomposition in soil before nutrients become available. Release of nutrients from these though slow, continues for longer periods. Organic materials unlike fertilizers, also improve the physical aid biological conditions of soil. A certain minimum quantity of organic manures is therefore, essential and the quantity recommended to be applied is about 10 kg per pit in the initial three years and 25 kg thereafter.

Time of harvesting depends on land variety and growing season. Generally, it can be scheduled when plants are 40-60 centimeters in height. Shorter days induce flowering. Optimum yield (biomass) and stevioside quality and quantity is best just prior to flowering. AT NO POINT OF TIME PLANTS SOULD BE ALLOWED TO FLOWER SINCE AFTER FLOWERING THE STEVIOCIDE PERCENTAGE GOES DOWN RAPIDLY AND LEAVES ARE .

 RENDERED UNMARKETABLE

The plant will tolerate very low temperatures. Usually can be harvested 3-4 times in a year. 

100 kg of dry Stevia leaves can be processed into 8-12 kgs of final product (white sugar) which is 8-12%, the final product is called steviocides.

Stevia Cultivation In India

Stevia cultivation in India is a new. The plantation started 6-7 years before.  We went through an article on medicinal plant. The article highlighted the benefit of the stevia. We stuck with crop and try to find out the information on stevia cultivation. Before 5-6 years the content on stevia was not available so much in context to India.  We got some seed from one importer of the stevia seed from Brazil. We started the cultivation the results were as per the expectations. We approached some farmers for the stevia cultivation. Initially it was very hard to make them to cultivate stevia.  We could able to fill the confidence in two three growers for the stevia cultivation. Those 2-3 growers were agree to cultivate the Stevia. They were happy to see the crop in the field. Since the crop was new so there was no one to assist us on the problems in the stevia cultivation. We harvested the crop. It was very tough for us to find the buyer. We got some contact and sold out the stevia. The selling part was very tough. No one knew, to should we sell it.
                                              
The problem is still with the farmers that to whom they should sell their produce. The market is not open as the general agriculture commodity. The demand is there in the market but no one knows where it is??

Slowly and slowly we involved more farmers we became confident toward the cultivation side.  We could able to understand the package of practices of the stevia crop in the Indian conditions. We clearly made a small cultivation guideline on the stevia crop. Mean while we came in contact with some other person who were involved in the stevia cultivation. The govt also started to assist the stevia crop under medicinal crop plantation.

The demand for sugar in Sri Lanka is likely to go up steadily in the coming years, in tune with the growth of the economy and percapita
income of the country men. To meet this demand for sugar, Sri Lanka has to import its requirement of sugar to considerable extent in future. In the international market, the price of sugar is fluctuating,which appears to be considerably manipulated by the global trading houses and cartels.

This situation point to the need to focus on stevia cultivation in Sri Lanka in a big way. Stevia is the natural sweetener and it can solve the problem of sugar shortage to some extent ,if the cultivation of stevia would be promoted by the government by suitable policy initiatives.

Stevia can certainly be used as substitute for sugar particularly for industrial purposes. A kilogramme of stevia is around 200 to  300 times more sweet than a kilogramme of granular sugar and stevia provides zero calories.

Stevia is a cholestral free sugar alternative medicinal plant .The sweetness of stevia is preserved in its leaves for length of time with no appreciable decrease in sweetness. The stevia leaves contain several chemicals called glycosides, which taste sweet, but do not provide calories. Glycosides in the leaves of stevia include upto 10% stevioside and stevioside accounts for its incredible sweetness, making it unique.

The crude leaves and the crude stevia extracts from the leaves are 10 to 15 times sweeter than commercially available granular sugar. The refined extracts of stevia contain 85 to 95% of steviosides,which is in liquid or natural creamy, off white colour powder form. The refined stevia are 200 to 300 times sweeter than sugar.

Cultivation practices and yield

Stevia plants grow best in a rich, loamy soil .A region with low wind velocity, and assured water resources suits this plant well. The plants will grow to a height of 75 cm and width of 45 to 60 cm.



Global Scenario

Stevia is cultivated primarily in South America and Asia. Countries growing Stevia include Paraguay, Brazil, Canada, USA, China, Korea, Taiwan, Japan, Ukraine and United Kingdom.

Worldwide more than 1,00,000 hectares are reported to be covered under Stevia cultivation, of which China has a major chunk.

Global demand for stevia extract is now many thousands of metric tonnes.

In USA, in September of 1995, the FDA allowed stevia and its extracts to be imported as a food supplement but not as a sweetener. Stevia is currently legal as a dietary supplement and must be labeled as such for sale in USA.

In Japan. in the 1970s, the Japanese government approved and the plant and food manufacturers began using stevia extracts to sweeten everything from sweet soy sauce and pickles to diet Coke. Stevia and its extracts have captured over 40% of the Japanese market.

In Brazil , stevia is fully approved for use . China and South Korea have approved the use of stevia as sweetener.

Major food companies like Coca Cola and Beatrice Foods, use stevia extracts to sweeten foods for sale in Japan, Brazil and other countries where it is approved.

Sri Lankan Scenario

Stevia can have demand potentials in Sri Lanka, since it is a natural sweetener without calories, particularly considering the diabetic population in Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka is not cultivating any stevia at present and even if any experimental plantation would have been carried out in the recent past, it would be at negligible level.

Obviously, stevia production, particularly considering the fact that it is atleast 200to300 times sweeter than granular sugar, will elegantly meet the requirement of sugar in Sri Lanka including the demang in pharmaceuticals, confectionary and soft drink industries in Sri Lanka. The consumers wanting to substitute sugar would find stevia to be an acceptable alternate choice.

Sri Lanka needs a strong proactive stevia promotional programme from the government that would provide multiple benefits , apart from enabling the country to reduce its dependence on sugar imports to some extent.
